PSU-AAUP submits Demand to Bargain Implementation of Department Workload policy

October 03, 2017 / Phil Lesch

A member advised PSU-AAUP that the (new) department chair in the member’s unit placed faculty workload on an upcoming faculty meeting agenda.  The department chair shared their intention to change workload assignment practices and included workload examples from other universities.

Establishing Workload policy, and/or making changes in workload assignment practices are mandatory subjects of bargaining. As such, PSU-AAUP submitted a demand to bargain over the decision and/or the effects of the decision to change workload assignments, and/or establish a workload policy in the unit. Because we are concerned that this change could show up in other units in that school, we demanded to bargain the change in policy or practice over workload in any other unit in that school, or in any school.

The University has a statutory requirement to provide notice to PSU-AAUP, and PSU-AAUP has the right to demand to bargain on the implementation of any workload policy or the change of any workload assignment practice. The University has historically NOT provided PSU-AAUP with this notice, and we have been forced to react as we did in this case.

If any faculty member or academic professional hears an administration share their intention to change the procedure or criteria over the assignment of faculty workload, and/or establish a new policy or change workload policies, we need to hear about it. Please contact Phil Lesch.
