PSU-AAUP Membership Status & Dues

Membership Status

Just because you have dues taken out of your paycheck, that does not necessarily mean that you are a member.

There are two type of dues- "fair share" dues (also known as "fee-paying objectors"), and membership dues. Unless you have filled out a membership form and are paying membership-level dues, you are not a member.

Fair Share individuals are still represented in collective bargaining and contractual matters by PSU-AAUP. Faculty who choose not to join PSU-AAUP must still pay their "fair share" of the costs associated with negotiating and maintaining the contract between the University and PSU-AAUP. Currently, this means that non-members pay dues at a rate of 75% of regular member dues. While fair-share payers receive equal representation and assistance with matters involving the contract as PSU-AAUP members, they are not eligible to hold office, to vote on important chapter decisions or to participate in the various insurance plans and other benefits described in Membership Benefits. In many cases, the difference between paying two-thirds of regular dues and full dues is only a few dollars a month. For this small difference, you can fully support the union which protects your rights and expands them through collective bargaining. Apply now! (pdf document)

Member dues are deducted automatically from your paycheck each month. There are two categories of membership:

Active Entrant For non-tenured faculty with 1-4 years service in PSU-AAUP bargaining unit. Active Entrant dues are calculated at .00375 of your salary (half of full-member dues).

Full Member For all tenured faculty and people with 5+ years of service in PSU-AAUP bargaining unit. Full member dues are calculated at three-fourths of one percent (.0075) of your salary.

Using the above rates, monthly dues are calculated as follows:

(SALARY) x (FTE) x (AAUP Rate)/(9 or 12 months)

Example 1
The monthly deduction for a new, full-time untenured member making $30,000 paid over nine months would be approximately $12.50 [$30,000 x 1.0 x .00375 / 9].

Example 2
The dues for a non-member fair-share payer would be two thirds of that amount, or $8.38.
