PSU Faculty Rallies in the Park Blocks!
About 150 faculty members at Portland State University rallied Monday in the Park Blocks to put pressure on administrators to raise salaries and improve working conditions in stalled contract talks. Wearing red "Invest in Faculty" T-shirts and black "Got Strike?" buttons, professors cheered union leaders, who urged them to ask tough questions about the latest contract offer. The protestors then filled an auditorium on campus, where administrators talked about the university's budget and salary proposal. Negotiations broke down in December, and the two sides have been meeting with a mediator since January. The next mediation session is scheduled for March 6.
"I think both sides still have a benefit in being at the table," said Jonathan Uto, chief negotiator for the PSU chapter of the American Association of University Professors. In 2006-07, average faculty salaries at PSU ranged from $37,800 for an instructor to $83,000 for a professor, according to the Oregon University System.
