About PSU-AAUP Associate & Emeritus Membership

Associate Membership

Associate Membership is a class of membership designed for Portland State employees that are not in the PSU-AAUP bargaining unit. It is completely voluntary.

Though Associate membership is non-voting membership, there are significant benefits to Associate membership:

  • Associate members get emails from us. We have an associate member email database and we keep associate members in the loop about issues impacting faculty at PSU in relationship with management and in state issues.
  • Associate members can get regalia reimbursement like regular members up to $58/year.
  • Associate members as a group freely use the Executive Director as a resource in their relationship with management as a manager, and in brainstorming strategies to problems from the basis of being an enlightened, employee-oriented manager.
  • AAUP members consult with Associate members to get a management perspective on faculty issues.
  • Associate members can deduct member dues as a tax deduction.
  • Associate members have the undying gratitude of AAUP members for standing in solidarity with them on issues that affect their employment, and quality higher education as an investment in Oregon’s future.
  • When the Executive Director has an opportunity to recommend managers to important committees (they will frequently make suggestions about the management bargaining team and other committees where AAUP and management interface), they will suggest Associate members first (if they are interested in being appointed).

Associate membership dues are the same as regular membership. They are currently 1.164% of monthly salary (as of January 1, 2021).

We hope you will consider remaining an Associate member during your time away from the AAUP bargaining unit. If you have any questions about Associate Membership, contact aaup@psuaaup.net.

Membership Status

We are a union campus. We are the largest of six (6) unions on campus. Approximately 78% of the faculty and academic professionals are members of the Association and pay member dues to the Association for the services we provide in collectively bargaining and enforcing the contract.

You are not automatically a member when you commence employment at Portland State University. To become a member, you must fill out a membership application

You need to fill out a membership application only once, and your membership continues from one academic year to the next.

If you do not fill out an application, then you will be relying on your co-workers to pay the cost of bargaining and enforcing the contract completely while you pay nothing. Your coworkers want you and expect you to pay your share and want you to become a member.

Member Dues are deducted from your paycheck. Your pay stub will indicate you are a member:

  • Members Dues deductions from paychecks are indicated “AAUP Union Membership Dues.”
  • More information on Member Dues can be found HERE.

PSU-AAUP represents instructional faculty and academic professionals employed by Portland State University at .5 FTE and above.

By becoming a member, you are supporting academic freedom, tenure, shared governance, and many other rights now enjoyed at Portland State University. These practices must be defended not just at PSU, but nationwide. AAUP works on the principle of pooled strength:

The strong help defend the weak. Over the years, members have joined not just because they may need AAUP themselves but because they realize that the maintenance of academic freedom is imperative to the future of higher education.

We need your support! By filling out a membership application:

  • you are helping AAUP lobby at the state and national level to ensure that there is money available. The more members we have, the stronger our voice in Salem and in Washington, DC
  • you are helping fight attacks on tenure and academic freedom at the national level
  • you can vote on contract ratification or on other important union issues

Membership Status

We are an agency fee campus. This means that all

faculty members must become a member of the Association, or pay service fees

(fair share fees) to the Association for the services we provide in

collectively bargaining and enforcing the contract.

You are not automatically a member when you

commence employment at Portland State University. You are a Fair Share Fee

Payer until and unless you fill out and send in a membership application.

To become a member, you must fill

out a membership application and send it to PSU-AAUP at Smith 232.

You need to fill out a membership application only

once, and your membership continues from one academic year to the next.

If you do not fill out an application, then you

will pay fair share fees to PSU-AAUP. Fair Share fees are the per cap “fair

share” costs of collectively bargaining and enforcing the contract.

Member Dues and Fair Share fees are both

automatically deducted from your paycheck. Your pay stub will indicate whether

you are a member or a Fair Share Fee Payer.

• Fair Share Fee deductions from paychecks are

indicated “AAUP Union Fair Share Deduction.”

• Members Dues deductions from paychecks are

indicated “AAUP Union Membership Dues.”

The deduction for Member Dues and

Fair Share Fees is the same (effective October 1, 2010),

Each year PSU-AAUP sends a legal notice, known as a

Hudson notice, to all Fair Share Fee payers via US Mail to their home address

of record regarding their legal rights as Fair Share Fee Payers. Information

about that notice, and the Association Procedure regarding our compliance with

the requirements of Hudson, can be found at http://www.psuaaup.net/associationpolicy.htm#hudson. The Hudson notice is sent out on or about November 20 of each year

after the Association receives its first complete list of Fair Share Fee Payers

on or about November 10 from the October 25th paycheck, the first complete

payroll run of the academic year.
