Advising Redesign Implementation Session 3

November 16, 2017 / Phil Lesch

We previously reported in the report out for Session 2  that we identified 9 "buckets" of potential effects of the implementation that required bargaining. Both teams took that list into their respective caucuses on the following day, and then reported out in Session 3 a general sense of overwhelm, and the feeling that the list had to be broken into subgroups if we were going to make timely progress.

The Labor Management Committee also determined (separately) that we had an urgent need to resolve all outstanding issues and implement the compression/inversion/equity adjustments called for in Article 30 Section 4 for Jan/Feb 2017 in this tax year to avoid serious tax implications for members and the university for payment of 2017 wages in 2018.

The teams decided that they would break into two groups, and that they would meet simultaneously on December 4. The “Faculty Equity Workgroup,” would meet Dec 4 (and prior if possible) to resolve outstanding issue with the equity adjustments. The "Advising Redesign Workgroup," would meet to address the impacts of the advising redesign implementation on "Advisor Assignments," and "Scheduling and Appointments." The workgroup would bring back to the main table recommendations for language to implement.

The faculty equity workgroup would attempt to meet in addition to December 4 to resolve the matter.

On December 11 and December 15, we are scheduled to meet for full days for advising redesign implementation IBB. On those days we would separate as needed to resolve the equity adjustment, but we plan to come back and spend approximately 50% of the scheduled time with the full table addressing "Advisor Roles and Responsibilities," and "Personnel Evaluation and Supervision." Both teams consider these buckets to be the initial primary focus of bargaining.

The teams agreed that they would extend bargaining, and would schedule additional dates after the New Year, as necessary to bargain the impacts of advising redesign implementation to completion.
