Bargaining Update: It’s heating up at the bargaining table!

July 14, 2022 / PSU-AAUP

It’s summer and things are heating up at the bargaining table! The Collective Bargaining Team is working tirelessly to represent members’ interests.

At our last bargaining session, AAUP presented its initial arguments for PSU to improve its SUPPORT FOR CAREGIVERS.

Did you know that for unlicensed childcare in Oregon …

  • Academic Professionals earning the minimum salary rate could be paying 53% of their pre-tax salary for childcare for one infant?

  • Academic Ranked Instructional/ Research Faculty (9 month) earning the minimum salary rate could be paying 35% of their pre-tax salary for one infant?

We must provide financial and other support to our members who are also caregivers. During the coming weeks we will be working with Administration to identify possible solutions.

COST OF LIVING INCREASES UP NEXT
Cost of living increases are high on our list of hot topics! Our salaries have not kept up with inflation. The following graph tells the startling story of our salaries. The last time our salaries matched the CPI-U West was in January of 2019. Since then inflation has skyrocketed and our salaries have remained flat.

We continue to engage in Interest-Based Bargaining with Administration, working to achieve desperately needed economic improvements in our contract.

What subjects are open during this limited contract reopener?
As you may recall, this bargainer is a limited economic re-opening of our contract, which means only select articles are open for negotiation. They are:

  • Cost of living adjustments (COLAs)
  • Parking & Transportation
  • Staff tuition privilege
  • Caregiver Provisions
  • Individual professional development accounts (IPDAs)
  • Academic Professional Salary Adjustment Pool
  • Minimum Salary Rates for ranked instructional and research faculty

How far along are we into bargaining?
We have opened every issue with the exception of Parking & Transportation. We are also well on our way to coming to a tentative agreement on the staff tuition privilege.

“How can I get involved to make this bargain a success?”
Right now, the most powerful thing members can do is show up for bargaining on Zoom and participate in Slack Channel conversations!

As we roll into mid-summer, there are several more bargaining dates already on the calendar:
