On October 8, 2020, the Executive Council voted in support of two legislative candidates, Cal Mukumoto for State Representative and Chris Gorsek for Oregon Senate. The Council also supported Oregon Education Association in their urge for the Department of Corrections to withdraw its proposal to radically alter its Adult Basic Education Programming. On October 15, 2020, the PSU-AAUP Executive Council voted to support and endorse a local democracy Portland Pledge for unions/organizations and to send that petition to our elected leaders:
Local Defending Democracy PDX pledge (based on Choose Democracy’s national pledge):
- We will vote.
- We will refuse to accept election results until all the votes are counted.
- We will nonviolently take to the streets if a coup is attempted.
- If we need to, we will shut down “business as usual” to protect the integrity of the democratic process.
