Admin Gets a ‘C’ from Membership on Campus Covid Concerns

March 01, 2022 / PSU-AAUP

In our recent member survey (“Campus Covid Precautions,” Winter 2022), we collected data and testimonies from APs and Faculty about our experiences with remote teaching, campus COVID-19 precautions, and returning to campus during the recent Omicron surge. It was clear from the survey results that members are concerned about COVID-19 transmission on campus, increased workload, and low morale. Admin’s ‘C’ grade for Winter 2022 precautions should come as no surprise. In fact, only 7.6% of respondents rated the Admin’s precautions as “Excellent” (see figure below).

In the open-ended portion of the survey, members further described their workload as “intense” and “tiring.” Adding to the workload-related frustrations was the University’s decision to discontinue Covid-19 testing at SHAC for on-campus APs and Faculty on January 1st, 2022. Members further described their low morale by expressing how they felt “disposable” and a serious lack of trust with Admin.

To be extremely clear, our members are indispensable, and the Admin must work to regain our trust. Trust cannot be “re-imagined” with grants. On the contrary, trust is earned by listening to and implementing the needs of membership. We greatly appreciate all members for sharing their thoughts and being vulnerable with us, as it provides our bargaining team insights as they are at the bargaining table with Admin.
