President’s Weekly Message:  Bargaining & News - June 10, 2013

June 10, 2013 / Phil Lesch

Bargaining:
Next Session is Tuesday, June 25th, Noon - 3 pm, in Market Center Bldg 650.

Please come to observe if you can! We had a great turn out on Tuesday, June 4th, which makes a huge difference, and also meant that the Bargaining Team could caucus with members to better understand the impact of particular Administration proposals.  Next time we're scheduled to talk about Peer Review, Professional Development, Salary, Retirement and Health Insurance.

Bargaining:  Last Session, on June 4th, PSU-AAUP called for

  •     3-year rolling contracts for 90% of fixed-term faculty who've worked here for 3yrs, meaning that you'd always be in the first year of a 3-year contract, as is true at SOU.
  •     1% raises for satisfactory evaluations for APs and Fixed Term Faculty, in addition to whatever other pay agreements are negotiated.
  •      the ability to work at home for APs during University Closures.
  •      vacation cash-out for APs who can't take all of their vacation leave.

The PSU Administration proposed increased library administration control over library faculty members' scholarly agendas.

Come ask questions at the PSU Town Hall, with President Wiewel, Provost Andrews and VP Rimai, Tuesday, June 11th, 3 to 4:30, in the SMSU Ballroom.

  •     Why are deep academic cuts being proposed when we subsidize Athletics with $3 million a year annually?  Our students can't attend games;  they work too much.
  •     In our push into on-line education, how will we ensure high quality, a good fit for our student body and protections for intellectual property?
  •     How is the PSU Administration advocating for meaningful representation of faculty, students and staff on an Institutional Board for PSU?
  •     How is the PSU Administration championing the renewal of public funding for higher education, so that we don't eviscerate universities while saddling students with terrible debt?
  •     Why is the PSU Administration supporting the reduction of benefits to retired faculty, rather than eliminating wasteful tax breaks and prison spending?

Strike Strategy Committee Meeting, Tuesday, June 11th, Noon to 1:30 in SMSU 323

The Strike Strategy Committee is a sub-committee of the Bargaining Support Team, which will meet as a whole on Thursday, June 27th at noon, location TBA.  Come to the Strike Strategy Committee meeting to research, plan and prepare for striking if it comes to that, and for supporting our colleagues if SEIU or PSUFA find they have to strike.  For more info, contact Micheal Chamberlain or Gary Brodowicz.

The Executive Council of AAUP-Oregon met Saturday, June 1st at OSU and

  •     will submit a proposal to National AAUP to subsidize organizing, with an eye on OSU and OIT.
  •     learned that UO faculty are making progress in negotiating their first contract.
  •     coordinated our efforts to maintain meaningful faculty, student and staff representation on higher ed governing boards in Oregon.

Best,
Mary King,
President, PSU-AAUP
